» Question / Answer sessions Every 2 weeks, Katherine answers questions from her fans. If you want to ask a question, send an email to
question@thelword-fr.net or meltlw@free.fr. The Q/A session is copyrighted and exclusive to www.thelword-fr.net and is not to be copied or reproduced without written permission. 1.) Besides your L Word castmates, which actors that you've worked with have inspired you the most, and how/why did they inspire you? Katherine: in the recent months, i'd have to say lee pace. i think he is painfully talented and just such fun to work with. i feel lucky that he was the other half of the play [Guardians] we did together. 2.) Coming back and living in NYC for the play Guardians must have reminded you of your NYC days. Of the three cities, Philly, the place you grew up (I think), NYC, the place you studied and worked and LA, the place you work and surf (ha), which city gives you the feeling of being home? If it isn't any of these 3, where and why? Katherine: right now, l.a. is my home. being in nyc definitely reminded me of my time there but it is also my past. same with philly. 3.) What's your favourite time of the day? Katherine: early mornings. i love the quiet feeling, before anyone else is up. 1.) I think it's a little bit early to ask, but what is the most impressive movie (to you) so far this year and why? Katherine: little miss sunshine. that movie got me. 2.) The commentary you did with Leisha and Erin was so great last season. I read that you recorded commentary for Season 3 but it's not on the DVD. Did you gals get any flak from the last one you did? Katherine: we never did commentary for the dvd this year, and to be vague... i don't think our commentary went over well with everyone. 3.) You made your first ever convention appearance at the L2. I imagine dealing with so many fans for a whole weekend is very exhausting. Did every day feel the same or did you experience each of them in a different way? Katherine: the convention was such a unique experience. it was exhausting but in the best way possible. to be able to look in the eyes of the people who really love the show, and who benefit from it is just so special. the 2nd day felt different to me only because i was able to handle my jet-lag better. on the 1st day, i really thought i was gonna fall over from exhaustion. but it was well worth it and i would be happy to be a part of it again. 4.) You looked genuinely happy to be at L2 - and I would like to say thank you so much to yourself and all the guests for being so warm, smart, funny, sweet, open, gracious and giving with your time and energy throughout the weekend. Especially so given the travel/jetlag and hard work for you. You are all really lovely, amazing people. Now that it's over and you've had a little time and distance, would you like to share any reflections on how the convention was for you? Is there a particular memory or highlight that stands out? Katherine: you are so welcome. i'm glad you made it and had a great time. personally, i thought a lot of the attendees had a great sense of humor, and weren't scared to voice their thoughts. it also broke my heart to see some so nervous that they couldn't speak. everyone was so respectful, that it made it so welcoming to be there. so, i don't have specific moments, but that is what i feel when i look back on it. 5.) From the casting announcements released, it seems we'll be seeing quite a few new faces in Season 4. How has it been having so many new actors with you on set and getting used to acting with them? Katherine: i feel like a "few new faces" is an understatement. to be honest, it was tough to work with a whole new onslaught of people at once. not to say it was miserable. just different. i think what was really felt most was the absence of erin and sarah. 80 new people couldn't make up for that. but at the end of the day, work is work. you're not supposed to love everyone, you just want to do the best you can. 1.) What do you do to cheer yourself up when you feel depressed? Katherine: taking my dog to the dog park or doing any form of exercise. 2.) If one song could describe your life at the moment, which one would it be? Katherine: my life has been constantly changing recently so it would be more of a compilation album. 3.) I really like the new W magazine pictures. Can you tell us something about the artist, how you got involved in the project and what you think about the outcome? Katherine: i actually just saw the photos myself. i think they turned out beautiful. richard is a wonderful artist whom i admire. so when i was asked to be part of that i was flattered. it's such a compliment when an artist is interested in something you bring to the table. 4.) What subject(s) did you like/dislike in high school? If someone were to go back and ask your high school teachers what kind of a student/person you were at that time and what they think of your success, what do you think their responses would be? Katherine: it wasn't the subjects i liked as much as certain teachers. i loved my english teacher i had in senior year. we would read plays and literature and then dissect them. she treated her students like adults, which made her class real because she would actually want to hear what you had to say. also my spanish teacher in my 1st two years at school had such patience and was so kind. she made learning the language fun. those two women stick out in my head. i won't go into whom i disliked because it wouldn't be nice. but, i have no idea what any of them would say about me. i'd be surprised if they would even remember me. it's been 10 years so they have had many kids come in and out of their doors. 5.) You have been working non-stop for many months (Guardians + TLW 4th season) and you really deserve to take a break. Do you have any holiday plans? Katherine: yeah, it has been a busy year. i haven't made any solid plans for the holidays yet, but i have made it known that i do not want to travel anywhere. hopefully my loved ones will come to me. 1.) Kate, is it really you answering these questions? How to be sure? Katherine: yes it is. have a little faith. 2.) The world has been needing a show like the L Word and thankfully it has had a huge amount of acclaim over the past few years. The show portrays a controversial way of life, so I was wondering if you had experienced any negativity from viewers? Katherine: not personally but i've read and heard things that are clearly negative. there's not much to do about it. pleasing everyone is an impossible task. 3.) If you had a one-way, one-trip time machine, would you use it? If so, what time period would you go to? And why? Katherine: i would most likely want to go back about 5 years and possibly change a few things. but in the end i have a feeling it's better to let things be. 4.) What are the pros and cons of being on the acting side of the entertainment industry? Katherine: the best thing is being able to work and make a living out of it. the worst? sussing out the bullshit. 5.) You just finished shooting Season 4. Is there anything you are able to share, things we have to look forward to? Katherine: less depression and more light hearted fun... for the most part. 1.) Can you remember when you were asked for an autograph the first time in your life? How did you feel? Katherine: i don't remember. that sounds terrible but i've never been asked that before, so i really don't know. 2.) Halloween is coming up pretty soon. What was your favorite Halloween costume when you were a kid? Katherine: i loved the costumes you could get at rite aid. with the plastic mask. and the suit you could wear over your clothes. 3.) Living in California, how did you get involved in the Empire State Pride Agenda? Do you feel like there is progress towards gay marriage being legalized in New York and nationally? Do you think you'll see it in your lifetime? Katherine: i'm not aware of being part of that organization. But it sounds great. i hope one day we are all looked at as equal. we need a new president and senate first. 4.) What are the simple things you love in your every day life? The simple little things that make your day brighter or lighter? Katherine: quiet mornings, fireplaces, a comfortable couch, clean laundry. boring stuff but it makes me happy. 5.) If you were to ever write an autobiography, what would you call it and what would the first chapter be about? Katherine: at this point in my life the title would be "YES I'M THAT OBNOXIOUS TO ASSUME I'M THAT INTERESTING....". i guess the first chapter would be called "don't stop after the first sentence". 1.) What made you decide to agree to answer fan questions on a bi-weekly basis? What motivates you to avail yourself to us in that way? Katherine: i just thought it was a great idea. it gives me a way to communicate with the people that have allowed me to work. to get support, you have to give support. 2.) How long does it take the actor's part of each episode to be completed? Are there many different components involved in this process for you? Katherine: i don't really understand the question. but if you're asking how long it takes to do an episode, it always changes. 3.) What misconceptions do people have about you? Katherine: that i'm shane. 4.) What's working with Cass Bird like? Do you get to weigh in on stuff like what to wear, how to pose and/or other aspects of the creative process? Katherine: cass is a dear friend, so i'm incredibly comfortable with her. and shooting is just a free for all. even with an idea in mind. i'd be happy if she did all the shoots. 5.) You mentioned you like surfing and biking. Are there any other sports you like to do or watch? Are you a competitive person? Katherine: i like going to basketball games and surf competitions. and no, i'm not competitive, maybe that's a bad thing? 6.) What personality trait do you find to be an automatic turn-on? Turn-off? Katherine: turn on: sense of humor. turn off: indifference. 1.) I've read that John Krokidas is set to make a feature film version of Slo-Mo. Do you plan on being a part of that project? I've seen the short on HBO and can't imagine anyone else playing the part of Raven? Katherine: john is a great guy and i did hear it was being made into a feature. but not to my knowledge do i plan on playing raven. but that all could change. you never know. 2.) In the past, you mentioned 9/11, and if I'm correct, you lived in NYC at the time. What was going through your mind as the chaos started? Katherine: well, we all experienced it. yes, i was in nyc and all i can say is, imagine feeling so unsafe and not having any control of your environment. not to mention utter fear. that in a nutshell were the emotions. i’m sure anyone in the city at that time would say the same thing. 3.) What would you say is the geekest thing about yourself? Katherine: everything. 4.) In "Welcome to our Planet," you mentioned having an X-box. What kind of games do you like to play? Katherine: max payne, gun, obscure. i gave up on the xbox though. 5.) Will you be visiting any other parts of Europe on your starfury trip, or only London? Katherine: i don’t know. i would like to but i have to see what i have going on. paris would be nice. 6.) If you could be a superhero, what would you want your powers to be and why? Katherine: invincible. imagine all the trouble you could get into... 1.) Are you a religious or spiritual person? Katherine: more of a spiritual person. 2.) You've mentioned in the past that you are shy. Lots of actors say they are, though it seems it should be the opposite. Actors expose themselves in fictional settings in ways that a shy person in real day to day living might find uncomfortable. Do you think it had anything to do with your decision to become an actress? Katherine: i see it as an outlet to do or experience things i wouldn't normally in my everyday life. 3.) If you could put yourself in someone else's shoes for one day, who would it be and why? Katherine: that's a good question. sadly, i can't think of anyone. i need to live in my shoes for a while. 4.) Do you collect anything or have a fetish for anything such as shoes, bags, etc? Katherine: hats, sunglasses and t-shirts. i have too many at this point. 5.) What is your family background (country-wise) and do you have any special traditions? Katherine: i'm irish, german, scottish. we don't have big traditions. no one from my family is right off the boat from anywhere. if anything, we used to have big dinners on st paddy's day. 6.) You did a videoshoot for the Our Lady Peace song "Is Anybody Home". What was that like? And if you had the opportunity to be in another video, what song or artist would that be? Katherine: that was such a long time ago. i remember it being in toronto and freezing. it was a fun shoot though. and i would do another video for sure. i bet "the killers" would be a good one. 1.) Are you a political person? Many celebrities have been breaking into the world of politics. Would this ever be something you'd want to do in the future? Katherine: Not really. I have my own opinions on that matter but in the grand scheme of things I'm much too ignorant to really be involved like some others. I have my beliefs and when I can do something about it, I will. But it will be in my own way. 2.) When making decisions, do you go with your gut instinct or do you analyze everything thoroughly? Katherine: I try to the best I can. I have good intuition but my head takes over and then I make mistakes. But I plan on trusting it more now. 3.) You have recently signed on for the L event in London this winter. Have your co-stars that attended the event last year prepared you on what to expect? Are you excited? Katherine: I haven't gotten any advice, if that's what you mean. But I'm looking very forward to going to london. It's a great city and I have friends there. 4.) I love Sarah Shahi as Carmen and Eric Roberts as Shane's dad Gabriel, but if the casting decisions had been entirely up to you and Shahi and Roberts had not been available, who would you have cast as Carmen and Gabriel instead of them? Katherine: Why play that game? At this point I can't imagine anyone one else in either of those roles. I may have been able to give you a better answer on this 2 years ago. 5.) I read that one of your favorite directors was Ang Lee. Did you see his last movie, Brokeback Mountain ? If so, did you like it? Katherine: I do think Ang Lee's work is amazing. But I didn't love "Brokeback mountain" as much as I wanted to. I fell into the hype of it. "The ice storm" is still my favorite thus far. 1.) Last year you gave us a nice heads-up about doing a commentary for the season 2 DVD. Are you going to be doing any extra work on the season 3 DVD set? Katherine: not that i'm aware of. 2.) What is your fondest childhood memory? Katherine: spending summers at the beach, surfing with my cousin. 3.) In a previous Q&A, you said that for the third season, Cynthia and you tried to get the dior homme look going for Shane. What about this season? Did you get inspired by a designer too? Katherine: i don't think the character's style changes drastically at this point. so i'd say it's somewhat of the same style, but better. 4.) Where do you see yourself after TLW? Do you think the show has opened up a lot of doors for you? Katherine: i have no idea. it's hard to know if it has provided me with other facets of work, because i'm always working on the show. i guess time will tell. but the thought of the show being over is too much to grasp right now. 5.) I have enjoyed watching your performances in each season. If you had to choose a season which you can relate to the most, which one would it be, and why? Katherine: well, 1st of all. thank you. it's hard to really compare myself to shane because our belief system is pretty opposite. but to answer your question, i'd say 2nd season. triangles are never fun. 1.) Have you been able to keep up your New Year's Resolution to stop smoking? Katherine: not really. 2.) What has been your most embarrassing (one would be willing to share anyway) on-screen filming moment? Katherine: i wasn't thrilled seeing myself fully naked in the pool during the pilot. but who would be thrilled to see themselves fully nude in public? 3.) It is well known that you auditioned for the role of Brandon Teena in "Boys Don't Cry". What other roles, in well known films, have you auditioned for? Katherine: to give you that would be a laundry list. there is always someone above you with more experience, more bankability, etc... instead of eating up the page with a list, i'll leave it to you to decide. 4.) What was the last movie you saw and what did you think of it? Katherine: last movie i saw was "the village". i've seen it before so it kind of defeats the purpose of the film. still, i loved the story and the clues leading up to the finish. 5.) It's the first season without Erin Daniels. What was your favorite scene that you filmed with her and what do you miss most about working with her? Katherine: i loved working on every scene with erin. the memories are priceless. her humor, goofiness, loyalty, talent, friendship and trust are missed everyday. 1.) I know you may not consider yourself to be "famous" but what would you say are the best and worst parts of being in the public eye? Katherine: It's true, I don't see myself that way. But I guess what bugs me most is untrue gossip. As for perks? I have to say I really don't know. 2.) What does your family think about your involvement with The L Word? Would your mother ever make a cameo appearance like Mia's mom did in "Land Ahoy"? Katherine: My mom is very grateful I have an ongoing job. I don't think she would want to be an extra, maybe a reoccurring character. She is very grand. 3.) What would be at the top of your list of things you would want to do/accomplish in your life? Katherine: Learn how to drive stick. 4.) How do you relax after a hard day's work on TLW set? What things do you like to do in Vancouver when you get some time off? Katherine: A bath and a movie make [me] relax after work. I love to bike around the city. I take advantage of it since it's almost impossible to do in L.A. 5.) How difficult has it been to jump from Guardians which closed on May 25 to almost immediately flying off to Vancouver to begin season 4? Katherine: It wasn't that bad. I'm sure once this season is over the intensity of it all will smack me in the face. 1.) In an old interview, you said high school was not an easy time in your life. If you could travel back in time and give your teenage self a pep talk, what would you tell her? Katherine: i would just say "this too shall pass". 2.) Music seems to play a big part of The L Word's overall structure. Do you have any influence on the music that is played on the show? And who was your favorite musical guest that has appeared on The L Word? Katherine: no, i stay out of that department. my favorite music guests so far have been "sleater kinney" and "peaches". they both are so of the time. sadly, i thought peaches was underused. she is so fierce and raw. not to mention, all of those girls were so much fun to work with. 3.) If you could write a movie/series to act in, what type of story would you most like to tell and how would you write the character that you would most like to play? Katherine: i'm so far from being a writer. i think in terms of what genres i have enjoyed, a movie like "blow" would get my interest. or anything that involves shooting a gun and being dirty. 1.) How does it feel to be back on The L Word set for the fourth season? Katherine: it's really comforting. it's wonderful to be in vancouver after being in nyc, and working with my friends. it's a very relaxing environment and i appreciate it so much. thanks for asking. 2.) Is there a role or a storyline that you would never consider playing? Katherine: i can't think of anything specific. but there are perfunctory characters out there, and i have seen them in a lot of scripts. i would steer clear of those because i would not be fulfilled at the end of it. 3.) Your speaking voice is very rich and beautiful which implies a good singing voice. Do you like to express yourself that way and would you like to try acting that involved singing? Katherine: thank you but i am the worst singer that walks the planet. i would never subject myself or others to experience it. 4.) Do you have a philosophy in life? Katherine: "everything happens for a reason" and "this too shall pass" are my mantras when i need it. 5.) What hidden talent or fact about yourself would surprise fans? Katherine: i'm very sensitive. maybe at times to a fault. 1.) Do you have a myspace account? Katherine: to set the record straight, i do NOT have a myspace account. in fact, i don't even know what it really is. all i heard is that rupert murdoch owns it and that keeps me away. 2.) What type of perfume do you like to wear? Katherine: sorry, i can't tell you that one. it took me a long time to find that scent and i have always kept it a secret. 3.) During your stay in NYC, have you seen any Broadway shows? Katherine: sadly no. i'm upset i didn't get a chance to see "the lieutenant of inishmore". that was the one i wanted to see. 4.) In the December 2, 2005 Q&A, you mentioned that when you got the part as Shane, you had been unemployed for almost a year because of 9/11. Did you ever consider throwing in the towel and trying a different profession? Katherine: no, it never crossed my mind to do that. i figured the out of work reality wouldn't last forever, and something would come up. 5.) After your experience in "Guardians", if given the right role, would you consider doing another show either on or off Broadway? Katherine: for sure. i would be very open to it. it's just all about what comes my way. 6.) You've gone from working with a huge ensemble cast on what seems to be one of the most collaborative, close-knit TV sets ever, to doing a monologue play in which there was absolutely no interaction with the one other actor. Was that a jarring difference for you, or a nice vacation from TLW? Or both? Katherine: it was both. at first it was jarring and then it became exciting to see what i had to deal with each night (in terms of response or lack of one). also, i enjoyed just having myself to rely on, cause at least i can trust that. but, i do look forward to working with people again. 7.) Has performing in "Guardians" made any difference in your political opinions on the Iraq war or in general? Katherine: i always understood and agreed with the play's message. it didn't change my thoughts, just reinforced what was already there. 1.) What was the best part about your day today? Katherine: taking a nice walk around the west village with my dog. 2.) I know you hate "actor" questions but can you tell us how the experience of performing in Guardians for 6 weeks has changed you? Are you anticipating/dreading the play coming to an end? Katherine: if anything, i feel stronger from it. it was a fear of mine and i conquered it. also, i don't feel lazy. that makes me feel good, that i worked to get paid. but i'm a little sad and happy this show is coming to a close. i know i'll miss the routine. but i will be able to calm my mind, which i do look forward to. 3.) There obviously are differences in theater and tv... how do you find stage acting different from tv acting? Katherine: stage is about imperfections. and working with them... whether it be from you or the audience. it's kind of like winning. it feels good to think i dealt with this, that and the other, but i still felt good about my work on a certain night. with film, it's already there... everything is laid out. everyone's quiet; your clothes, makeup and hair are all good to go; and you know what to expect for the most part. film isn't less than by any means, but the immediacy is different. 4.) Broadway.com did a Q&A with Paul Rudd recently, in which he talks about the challenge of doing eight shows a week, and about how there are certain plays you can't relax in. Is that something you can relate to? Is doing eight shows a week as exhausting as it sounds? Are you able to relax and unwind between shows, or is it hard to push the play to the back of your mind? Katherine: thankfully we only have 7 shows a week. that doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference. but yes, i do agree. for me, this show is not the kind of job i just show up for. lee [Pace - actor] and i have been living this play since we started rehearsals. it's just that kind of piece. my chance to relax is every night when it's over. i get to walk home and release as much pent-up energy as i can. 5.) I just saw you in Guardians. You did an incredible job with a very difficult role, and I enjoyed it immensely-thank you for such a wonderful performance. After the show, you couldn't leave the theater without groups of women surrounding you. You were incredibly warm and accommodating, but I couldn't help but think how uncomfortable I would begin to get with so many people wanting my attention. How is that for you, and how do you deal with it? Katherine: first off, thank you so much. that means a lot and is always nice to hear... i take it as a very kind compliment. the fact that people make the effort and spend money buying a ticket and then show up is the nicest feeling. it's an honest form of support. so i extend a big thank you to all of you!! but i don't have a way of handling it. when i meet people after the show they are always very respectful and sweet. it's not like NKOTB at the mall or anything. but if it was a little crowded, at that point i'm just exhausted. someone could blow a whistle in my ear and i wouldn't feel it. 1.) Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Katherine: it really depends on the day. 2.) I observed you as Shane and I went to see Guardians in NYC, and I noticed you (personally) are incredibly different from these characters as well as they are from one another - from facial expressions to tone of voice. What are your techniques for getting into character? Is it a mentality? Or do you take on that character's life while you're filming or performing? Katherine: i really don't know. it is different for every role. i have no set technique... i'm sorry, i don't like "actor" questions. the answers are always self indulgent and filled with bullshit that everyone dozes off to. 3.) The reviews for your work in "Guardians" have largely been very positive. Were you nervous about how the play and your performance would be received among critics? And are you happy with the way it has been received? Katherine: i was terrified. and that is putting it lightly. thankfully for the most part they have been positive. but even the ones that didn't enjoy it, or didn't like my performance, all i can say is that i haven't done theatre in 8 years, and doing this kind of play is worlds away from what i've been doing recently - in terms of technique and content. also, i did put pressure on myself because i know what ny critics are like and i know that they aren't always kind to actors who come from film and tv. and here i am doing this political play no less, and working with jason [Moore - director] and lee [Pace - actor] who are both so talented and accomplished. i felt like i had a lot to live up to... but at the end of the day, i just think fuck it. i worked my ass off, and if they didn't like it, then let's switch places. i'll give you the orange jumpsuit and i'll judge you up there instead. 4.) What do you think the message of Guardians is? What do you hope audiences take away from the show? Katherine: that misplaced power can lead to evil and dark outcomes. and we are all susceptible to it no matter who we are. but basically i hope people walk out thinking never judge a book by its cover... it's usually a picture. 5.) There's been some speculation on the net that Jenny and Shane are secretly in love? What's your take? Just a really close friendship? Or is there a little somethin'-somethin' between them? Katherine: oh jesus!! i think they are friends. but don't ask me, cause honestly i really haven't the slightest clue at this point. and i'm the last one to know these things... 1.) In the previous Q&A session you said you'd take your ipod on a deserted island... what playlists have you created on it? Katherine: i don't do the playlists. i just find what i want to hear. 2.) What was the most deeply moving scene for you amongst The L Word three seasons? Why? And what was the funniest? Katherine: working with mia. i like the friendly intimacy our characters have together. so i guess that would be season 2. i think the funniest would have to be with leisha and erin. all of them. especially when dana was throwing up over the side of the boat in season 1. i think leisha and i lost it during that. 3.) How was your opening night for Guardians? Katherine: opening night was an interesting experience. i am glad that it's over and now the play can run its course and find its life without the press being there, or the opening night hoopla. it now feels like it can grow up normally. 4.) How did you get involved in this play? Did you audition the old fashion way? Katherine: i got a call about this amazing play. long story short... i read it, fell in love with it, and freaked out because it was a huge undertaking. i flew to nyc to read with everyone. and then i found out that it was mine. and then i freaked out even more because now it was real. 5.) Could you tell us a bit about the Guardians production? What attracted you to the play and the part? Katherine: when i finished reading it i was so touched and i hadn't felt that way about anything i had read for a while... she's a fun, but jaded, insecure girl who has a great sense of humor and a honest uncomplicated view on life. there was nothing not to love. the production is a very small intimate group - only 4 people including the director and stage manager - which made it a lot easier to fall into rehearsal. and everyone involved is just so beyond wonderful. it has been a very safe, nurturing environment. 1.) In a previous Q&A, you mentioned having dogs. What kind of dogs do you have, what are their names? When did you get them and is Otto (the puppy from 3.03) one of them? Katherine: i have 2 dogs. and no, otto is not mine. although i wish he was. i think they chose otto because he resembled my baby, floyd, who i got when i first moved to L.A. leisha and erin came with me to the pound and he was the 1st one seen and it was love at 1st sight. my other dog is captain. he is another terrier mix who i got while being in vancouver last year. he is almost a year now. 2.) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 albums would you take with you? Katherine: i would have my ipod instead. 3.) You have a great sense of comedic timing and bring a funny side to Shane, even though I think she's written to be the 'darkest' member of the group. Is comedy something that comes naturally to you, or do you consider yourself more of a dramatic actor? Katherine: thank you. that's nice to hear. i guess it comes naturally when it presents itself in the situation. even if it is subtle. it is fun to play with though. so thank you again. i'm glad you enjoy it. 4.) What are the countries that you've been to? Anything unforgettable happened to you while you were there? Katherine: i'm not big on travelling really. i love mexico though. i've been all over that country. i've seen some disturbing things in the more rural areas there. my most recent memory is when i went surfing in baja last spring and i left my surfboard unattended for 5 mins and within that time, it got stolen. thank god i had another one, but it was my fault for leaving it out. 5.) Are you happy with the ending of season three? Or would you have changed anything if it was up to you to decide how it would end? Katherine: i think it added a lot of "what ifs" for next year. i noticed a scene where i'm saying goodbye to my father's wife after i ditch the wedding was taken out. if anything i would want that back in just so there is some kind of closure or thought to where shane takes off to. 1.) What item / possession could you not live without & why? Katherine: even though they aren't objects, i'd have to say, my dogs. i feel like they are my kids at this point. and i miss them terribly when i'm not with them. 2.) Are you excited about your play the Guardians [more info here: www.45bleecker.com/guardians.html]? Being in front of a live audience and receiving their immediate reactions? Katherine: i'm really excited about the play. it is so well written that all i want to do is give it the justice it deserves. it will be very interesting to see the audience's response to this because it's a very challenging subject. 3.) What are some of your favorite television shows, past and present? Katherine: 90210, the cosby show, wonder years, intervention, sfu. and i hate to say it but it's true... laguna beach. 4.) Besides modeling and acting, what other jobs have you had? How did you like them? Katherine: i worked at a pizza joint at the ocean city boardwalk when i was 17 for a few weeks. then i had a job at the grocery store for 1 day. i don't have a strong work ethic for things i don't care about, which is why they only lasted for short periods at a time. 5.) I read this old Showtime chat transcript where you were asked what made you happy, and answered friends, love, food, life and music. What are some of your favorite foods, and do you like to cook, or are you more of an eat out/order in kind of girl? Katherine: i have to say, i hate that question because i can't think of any one thing. i'll put it this way, i like everything except tomatoes and eggplant. that being said, i do like to cook. i'm good at making cozy homecooked dinners. without tomatoes or eggplant in any recipe. and yes i do like to go out to dinner a lot. i think i'm a 50/50 blend of both. 1.) Since your mother has been a dancer, have you ever taken dance lessons? If so, what type of dance did you study? Katherine: my mom tried to get me into dance. when i was 3 i went to group ballet classes at my friend's house. long story short, i didn't love it. 2.) Are you satisfied with the direction your career is going? And since becoming more popular with your L-word stint is there anything you have changed in how you look for new roles and jobs? Katherine: i'm very grateful i have a job to go to every year. the more i do, the more experience i gain. of course there is the other side of me that wants to explore other venues. there are some factors though that can be difficult to override (like hiatus time, stereotyping, etc...). i try to do as much as i can to change my look for meetings and so forth because i would not be satisfied playing the same kind of role over and over again. 3.) During these last few eps., drama for Shane and Carmen has started to unfold. What do you think are the main problems in their relationship? Katherine: trust, communication, fear... the usual... they are just heightened and more dramatic to fit the show. 4.) You seem to be attracted to alternative roles. Does the thought of mainstream fame scare you? Would you want to be a household name like your famous cousin Gwyneth who can't seem to leave her house without being bothered by photographers? Katherine: i really can't relate to it on any level. it seems scary and invasive. if a big movie comes along and those are the strings attached then i would really have to love, love the project. i really believe slow and steady wins the race, so i'm gonna do what i do and if people like it great. if not, then it's not meant to be. 5.) You wear glasses in a few episodes. Are those an accessory or do you wear them in real life? Katherine: yes. i do wear them myself. i'm nearsighted. 1.) In episode 3.06, Carmen sprays Shane with a fire extinguisher; how many times did you get sprayed before the director was satisfied with the scene. And was it hard to sit there covered in "whatever" and not crack a smile while Alice/Leisha bragged about having "9000 orgasms" with a vampire? Katherine: i think we did that maybe 3 times. tricia [Brock - director of the ep.] was very cool and didn't want to kill me. i remember my skin feeling very dry and the taste of it was horrible. then smoking on top of it... i felt disgusting after work. this could have been the one time i didn't lose it while working with leisha. 2.) Which incarnation of Shane have you most enjoyed playing? (Player Shane of Season One? Troubled Shane of Season Two? Or Happy Shane of Season Three?) Which has been most challenging? Katherine: all 3 have presented its challenges. and on the flip side, allowed me to do things that are fun to work with. season 1 was the ultimate, because i worked with leisha and erin. but it was hard because i didn't want to play the idea of someone aloof. season 2 was a great time. i loved working with mia and developing the characters friendship. and i thought the tension with carmen was interesting to play with. it felt like a real build up to something. the most challenging would have to be season 3. sarah and i didn't want to fall into a fairytale relationship that fast. we wanted fuck ups. i like that carmen has become more judgemental this year. it makes her more real and honest. I'm glad shane cheated and stays shut down at times. it makes the relationship feel that it has the ebbs and flows of real life. 3.) What do you think it was about Cherie Jaffe that made Shane fall in love with her? And do you think it's telling somehow that when Shane (who until she met Cherie, didn't "do relationships") let down her guard and finally let herself feel, it was because of someone - Cherie - who was essentially unavailable (at least for the kind of relationship Shane was hoping for)? Katherine: i've learned that you're drawn to people who are meant to teach you something; who are a mirror to who you are and what you have to learn about yourself. cherie was just as unattainable as shane, therefore she found someone who could play her game. she lost at the end, but i think she gained perspective to who she is and what she has done to others. but shane is human so she doesn't seem to have fully learned her lesson yet. 4.) What would you consider to be your greatest strength and weakness? Katherine: strength: loyalty; weakness: impatience. 5.) What's a perfect day for you? Katherine: being at the beach in the morning, then have an afternoon drink with some friends. 1.) Given your background, was classical music a part of your life growing up? Did you play any instrument(s), and if so, which one(s)? Katherine: yes, that music was a huge part of my life. between my dad's shop and always hearing it at home, it was the first type of music i listened to. i tried the violin when i was 8 or 9 but it didn't stick. "twinkle twinkle little star..." was as far as i went. i found it to be terribly uncomfortable on my neck. 2.) In the previous Q&A, you said you censor yourself in interviews sometimes. Have you ever regretted saying something to a journalist? Katherine: i don't know if i have regretted anything. i have just learned through practice what their hooks can be for an article. i guess i have gotten better at reading in between the lines of questions. 3.) How old were you when you started smoking? Is there a story behind your first cigarette? And did you ever try to stop? Katherine: unfortunately i started at the tender age of 17. i would sneak one of my mom's and hang out my window... i wish i never did it. i tried to stop once. i was doing well but then 9-11 happened and all that work went out the window. i plan on doing so this year, it was my 2006 resolution. 4.) What is the most important lesson you've learned from life? Katherine: i haven't really been around that long in the grand scheme of things but my biggest lesson so far has been belief and faith. i guess they go hand in hand. they have helped during some tough times. 5.) When watching new seasons of The L Word at premiers or when the new episodes air on Sundays, do you get nervous about how the audience will respond? Katherine: sometimes... i mostly just analyze my work and cringe at things that i did in a scene that i didn't like. then i pray no one else notices. 1.) Cast members frequently comment on the close relationship everyone has with each other. It seems that this would make shooting scenes easier, since you are working with close friends. Does it ever make it more difficult, though? Perhaps if the scene is very emotional, for instance? Katherine: 99% of the time it makes the work day painless, because we spend it laughing and chatting. but when we have to work, we work. we all can very easily shift gears and focus. with leisha, we can barely get through scenes together because we laugh so much, and usually can't stop. i love that girl, but when we have to do emotional scenes we never make eye contact with each other because we know we will break. 2.) Prep school can be a weird place to go through your adolescence. What was your school like and how would you describe yourself as a schoolkid? Katherine: my school was fantastic if you were an academic. i wasn't, so i had a hard time with most of the classes because i didn't care. in high school, i was the usual surly kid going through puberty. i had my best friend forge notes from my mom that said i had dr appointments every other day so i could leave at noon. my other dear friend was the school president and we would sneak out to my car and smoke pot during lunch or study hour. it's a shame now, but i really just wanted to get out. 3.) Back in season 2, Shane tells Carmen she has a brother... If they decided to bring her brother into an episode, which actor would you like to play him? Katherine: she did say she had a brother, didn't she? in my dreams i would love james franco or ryan gosling. 4.) Do you enjoy reading? If so, do you have favourite authors? Katherine: i love reading. my favorite author as of late is augusten burroughs. he has such wit and perfect timing. i laugh out loud. 5.) Do you sometimes censor yourself in interviews? Katherine: yes i do. for 2 reasons... #1 being that reporters have a job to do, and that usually means finding a hook to grab someone to read the article. things you say can be taken out of context, which is unfortunate. and #2 is because i can be a bit blunt at times, which is my own fault so i have to watch my mouth. cf Bernard Pivot - Bouillon de culture. 1.) What is your favorite word? Katherine: cosy. 2.) What is your least favorite word? Katherine: no. 3.) What turns you on? Katherine: warmth. 4.) What turns you off? Katherine: anger. 5.) What is your favorite curse word? Katherine: fuck. 6.) What sound or noise do you love? Katherine: the ocean. 7.) What sound or noise do you hate? Katherine: car honking. 8.) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Katherine: designer. 9.) What profession would you not like to do? Katherine: car salesman. 10.) If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive? Katherine: a few people want to see you. |
